Even a single transit requires the full annual vignette; there is no daily or weekly option. It is valid from December 1 of the previous year through January 31 of the following year. Tunnels like the Gotthard are included.

What actually matters
The toll bill for a European road trip has three layers, and mixing them up costs money: vignette countries such as Austria, Switzerland and Slovenia charge a flat rate for a period, distance-toll countries such as Italy and France charge per kilometer at toll stations, and on top come special toll sections like the Brenner, Tauern or Karawanks that are NOT covered by the vignette. The most expensive mistake is another one though: buying the vignette from a reseller with a hefty markup instead of the official shop.

Yes, both: the vignette covers the regular highway network, while the Brenner autobahn A13 is a separate special toll section that costs extra. The same principle applies to the Tauern, Karawanks and a few other sections.
Always in the operators’ official shops (for example ASFINAG for Austria) or at gas stations near the border. Third-party sites sell the same digital vignette with a significant markup.
In Austria, consumer online purchases come with a delay of about 18 days before validity, unless you explicitly buy the instant option and waive the withdrawal right. If you leave spontaneously, buy at a gas station or choose the instant option deliberately.
