| Item | Your spec |
|---|---|
| Dates | Friday, September 25 to Sunday, September 27, 2026 (2 nights). Friday and Saturday nights |
| Group | 2 adults, own car from Portland, ME |
| Budget | Up to $900 total |
| Must-haves | Cadillac Mountain sunrise, coastal walks afterwards, lodging in Bar Harbor, lobster once, casual otherwise |
| Pace | Relaxed. One sunrise attempt per day maximum, coast loops after |
| Special request | The Cadillac Summit Road vehicle reservation explained for late September (how it works, release times, cost) plus an honest plan B on the coast if the summit is socked in |
1) At a glance
| Topic | The concrete facts |
|---|---|
| Sunrise on the summit | Sunrise at the 1,530 ft summit is about 6:20 AM on Saturday, September 26, 2026 (about 6:24 AM at sea level, calculated for Cadillac's coordinates) |
| Cadillac Summit Road access | Vehicle reservation required Wednesday, May 20 through Sunday, October 25, 2026. Cost $6 per vehicle, sold only online at Recreation.gov, never at the park (as of June 2026) |
| September Sunrise entry window | 5:00 AM to 6:30 AM, with a 90-minute entry window. Daytime window September 16 to 30: 7:00 AM to 6:30 PM, 30-minute entry window |
| Release times | 30 percent of Sunrise and Daytime reservations go on sale 90 days ahead at 10:00 AM ET, the remaining 70 percent at 10:00 AM ET two days ahead |
| The catch nobody tells you | Sunrise reservations are limited to one per vehicle per seven days. Daytime is one per vehicle per day. So with one car you get exactly ONE summit sunrise this trip |
| Park entrance pass | Separate from the reservation: $35 per private vehicle, valid 7 days, admits all occupants. The park is fully cashless |
| Recommended lodging | Bar Harbor Grand Hotel, 269 Main Street, downtown. Guide value $170 to $260 per night for 2 adults (as of June 2026) |
| Drive from Portland | About 175 miles, about 3 hours 20 minutes: I-95 north to Bangor, Route 1A east to Ellsworth, Route 3 south to Bar Harbor |
| Free transport in the park | Island Explorer buses are fare-free and run through October 12, 2026, fall schedules in effect since August 17, 2026 |
| Lobster night | Stewman's Downtown Lobster Pound, 35 West Street, oceanfront lobster bake |
| Realistic total | About $700 to $900 for two people including lodging, gas, park fees, and food. It fits, but not with a $60 lobster dinner both nights |
1b) Our recommendation, and the best alternative
Recommended: Bar Harbor Grand Hotel, 269 Main Street, Bar Harbor, ME 04609. It is a replica of the gilded-age Rodick House, and the front desk sells Acadia park passes directly, which is a genuinely useful perk when you are leaving the building at 4:45 AM and do not want to fumble with a fee machine. Free parking (important, downtown Bar Harbor parking is a competitive sport), free WiFi, continental breakfast 6:30 AM to 10:00 AM, heated pool and hot tub 9:00 AM to dusk, and a front porch with rocking chairs for the post-sunrise nap you will absolutely want. It is a 5-minute drive to the park entrance and rated 4 out of 5 on Tripadvisor from 2,414 traveler reviews, ranked #3 of the hotels listed for Bar Harbor there. King Room for two. Guide value $170 to $260 per night as of June 2026, so roughly $340 to $520 for your two nights. Phone 207-288-5226 (house line), 888-766-2529 (central reservations line of the group). Open in maps ↗
Alternative 1: Atlantic Oceanside Hotel & Event Center, 119 Eden Street. Twelve acres of oceanfront on Frenchman Bay, rooms with private balconies or patios, indoor and outdoor pools, complimentary breakfast, and about one mile from downtown, which means quieter nights and an easier exit toward the park entrance for a pre-dawn start. Rated 4 out of 5 on Tripadvisor from 2,646 traveler reviews. Guide value $170 to $260 per night for two as of June 2026, same basis as above (2 adults, 1 room, per night). House phone 207-288-5801, reservations 800-336-2463 (central reservations line of Witham Family Hotels, not the front desk). Open in maps ↗
Why the Grand wins for this trip: you are doing an alpine-style pre-dawn start and then coastal walks, so you want to be able to walk to dinner and stagger back without driving. Downtown Main Street beats oceanfront-but-a-mile-out on exactly two nights.
Why you might flip it: if you would rather hear waves than Main Street, and you like the idea of coffee on a balcony over Frenchman Bay at 7:30 PM, take the Atlantic Oceanside.

2) Day by day
Day 1: Friday, September 25, 2026. Portland to Bar Harbor, first coast walk
| Time | Plan |
|---|---|
| 9:00 AM | Leave Portland. About 175 miles, about 3 hours 20 minutes: I-95 north to Bangor, Route 1A east to Ellsworth, Route 3 south onto Mount Desert Island. Add a buffer, Route 3 through Ellsworth is the traffic bottleneck of the whole drive |
| 12:45 PM | Lunch stop in Ellsworth or push through and eat in Bar Harbor |
| 2:00 PM | Check in at the Bar Harbor Grand, 269 Main Street. Park free on site and leave the car there for the rest of the day |
| 3:00 PM | Shore Path warm-up walk. Starts at the town pier next to Agamont Park, hugs the water past the Bar Harbor Inn and runs roughly 0.75 mile one way with Porcupine Islands views. Free, no pass needed. Open in maps ↗ |
| 5:00 PM | Buy or confirm your park pass and print or screenshot the Cadillac QR code. Cell service in the park is unreliable and the ranger scans that code at the gate |
| 6:30 PM | Casual dinner at Side Street Cafe, 49 Rodick Street, open daily 11:00 AM to 9:00 PM, American comfort food and a famous lobster mac. Phone 207-801-2591. Prices plus tax, tip 15 to 20 percent. Open in maps ↗ |
| 8:30 PM | Lay out clothes, set alarm for 4:30 AM, sleep |
💡 Pack the sunrise kit tonight: hat, gloves, windproof layer, headlamp, thermos. On a 1,530 ft granite dome in late September at 6:00 AM, "chilly" becomes "why did we do this" fast without gloves.
Plan B (rain on the drive): shift the Shore Path to Sunday and spend the late afternoon in downtown Bar Harbor's shops and the Village Green instead, both indoor-adjacent and a 3-minute walk from the hotel.
Day 2: Saturday, September 26, 2026. THE sunrise, then the classic coast loop
| Time | Plan |
|---|---|
| 4:30 AM | Wake, coffee from the in-room Keurig |
| 5:05 AM | Leave the hotel. It is a short drive to the Park Loop Road and the Cadillac Summit Road turnoff, then a winding paved 3.5 miles to the top |
| 5:20 AM to 5:35 AM | Pass the check station. Your Sunrise window is 5:00 AM to 6:30 AM with a 90-minute entry window, so arriving inside it is easy, but early arrival wins you a parking spot with a view instead of one behind a van |
| 5:45 AM | Walk part of the paved Cadillac Summit Loop Trail and pick your spot facing Frenchman Bay. Restrooms and the gift shop are at the summit, and the gift shop sells coffee |
| ~6:20 AM | Sunrise. Stay put for 20 minutes afterwards, the light on the Porcupine Islands is arguably better than the moment itself. No departure time is enforced, the road only closes to vehicles at 9:00 PM |
| 8:00 AM | Back at the hotel for continental breakfast, served 6:30 AM to 10:00 AM |
| 9:30 AM | Coast loop: drive to Sand Beach, then walk the Ocean Path south to Thunder Hole and on to Otter Point, roughly 2 miles each way on an easy gravel path along pink granite cliffs. Open in maps ↗ |
| 12:30 PM | Jordan Pond House, 2928 Park Loop Road, Seal Harbor, for tea and popovers on the lawn with the Bubbles behind the water. Open late May into late October, shoulder-season hours run roughly 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM, so confirm on 207-813-4342 before you drive over. Reservations are indoor only, lawn seating is first come. Open in maps ↗ |
| 2:00 PM | Flat 3.3-mile Jordan Pond shore loop, or bail out and nap. You have been awake since 4:30 AM and there is no shame in it |
| 5:30 PM | Lobster night at Stewman's Downtown Lobster Pound, 35 West Street, oceanfront lobster bake with steamers, chowder, corn, and blueberry pie. Listed hours 11:30 AM to 8:00 PM in season, seasonal operation, so call 207-288-0346 the same day. Budget about $45 to $60 per person for a full lobster dinner, plus tax and 15 to 20 percent tip. Open in maps ↗ |
💡 Thunder Hole only thunders on a rising tide with a decent swell. Ask at the hotel desk that morning when high tide falls, and time your Ocean Path walk to hit Thunder Hole in the hour or so before it.
Plan B (summit fogged in, the honest version): fog on Cadillac is common in September and it is usually a low marine layer clinging to the coast, not the mountain. Three real options, in order:
- Go anyway. Your reservation is a timed entry, not a weather guarantee, and above a low fog bank the summit is often clear with a cloud sea below. That is the best photo of the trip.
- If the whole island is grey, drive instead to Schooner Head Overlook for a dramatic moody-sea sunrise, no reservation and no time window needed, then start the Ocean Path early while it is empty. Open in maps ↗
- Reservations can be changed at no cost to another time or date before the reserved time, so if Friday night's forecast is hopeless and Sunday looks clean, move it Friday evening rather than burning it.
Day 3: Sunday, September 27, 2026. Second attempt or slow coast, then home
| Time | Plan |
|---|---|
| 5:45 AM | Optional second sunrise, coast version. Sunrise reservations are capped at one per vehicle per seven days, so a second summit sunrise is not available to you. Instead: Bar Harbor's own Shore Path or Schooner Head Overlook, both free and reservation-free. If you bought the optional $6 Daytime reservation, you can be on the summit from 7:00 AM, which is still lovely low light |
| 6:30 AM | Hardcore alternative: hike up. Walking or biking to the summit needs no vehicle reservation at all, just your entrance pass. The Cadillac North Ridge Trail is the standard route, about 2.2 miles one way with open granite views nearly the whole way |
| 8:00 AM | Breakfast at the hotel, 6:30 AM to 10:00 AM |
| 9:30 AM | Last coast walk, pick one: Bar Island via the low-tide sandbar from Bridge Street (only crossable around low tide, read the posted tide sign at the trailhead and give yourself a wide margin), or the quiet side of the island for Ship Harbor and Wonderland, two easy shoreline loops near Bass Harbor Head Light. Open in maps ↗ |
| 12:00 PM | Check out, casual lunch in town, then drive home. About 175 miles, about 3 hours 20 minutes back to Portland |
💡 Your $35 entrance pass is valid for 7 days, so there is no reason to skip a final park stop on the way out. Otter Cliff and Monument Cove are both right on the loop road and cost you nothing extra.
Plan B (heavy rain): skip the sandbar entirely, tides plus rain plus a mudflat is not a memory you want. Do the Shore Path under an umbrella, then leave an hour early and take the coastal Route 1 alternative home through Camden for a scenic-drive consolation prize.
2b) Experiences and free offers
| Offer | Where / start | Price | Rating | Link |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Shore Path coastal walk (already in Day 1, listed once) | Town pier next to Agamont Park, 2 Main Street, Bar Harbor | Free | N/A, no product rating | Open in maps ↗ |
| Ocean Path, Sand Beach to Thunder Hole to Otter Point | Sand Beach parking, Park Loop Road | Free with your $35 park pass | N/A, no product rating | https://www.nps.gov/acad/planyourvisit/things2do.htm |
| Bar Harbor Premium Driving Tour with Thunder Hole & Acadia, 4 hours, small group, hotel pickup, includes a lobster roll stop at Jordan Pond | Downtown Bar Harbor hotel pickup | From $139 per person (as of June 2026) | 4.7/5 from 126 ratings | https://www.getyourguide.com/bar-harbor-l101508/bar-harbor-premium-driving-tour-with-thunder-hole-acadia-t498893/ |
| Acadia Carriage Roads E-bike Tour, 4.5 hours, small group, starts 10:00 AM | Hulls Cove Visitor Center, Acadia National Park | From $197 per person (as of June 2026) | 4.9/5 from 104 ratings | https://www.getyourguide.com/bar-harbor-l101508/acadia-national-park-carriage-roads-guided-ebike-tour-t588056/ |
Honest filtering note: Bar Harbor's Cadillac sunrise driving tours look tempting, but the ones on offer sit at private-group prices from $299 to $729 with only 4 to 12 ratings behind them, which does not clear our bar of at least 4.6 out of 5 from at least 50 ratings. The local culinary walking tour scores 4.7 but on 49 ratings, one short of the bar, so we leave it out rather than pad the list. With your own car and a $6 reservation, you do not need a tour to see the sunrise anyway. All links above are plain public product URLs, we take no commission.
3) Practical notes, checklist and costs
How the Cadillac reservation actually works, in plain English
- Two separate purchases. The $35 entrance pass gets your car into Acadia. The $6 vehicle reservation gets your car onto the Cadillac Summit Road. Neither replaces the other.
- Two ticket types. "Sunrise" for the pre-dawn window (September: 5:00 AM to 6:30 AM, 90-minute entry window) and "Daytime" (September 16 to 30: 7:00 AM to 6:30 PM, 30-minute entry window).
- Two release waves. 30 percent at 10:00 AM ET exactly 90 days ahead, 70 percent at 10:00 AM ET two days ahead. For your Saturday that is June 28, 2026 and September 24, 2026.
- Per vehicle, not per person, and no re-entry on one reservation.
- Sunrise is one reservation per vehicle per seven days. Daytime is one per day.
- Vehicles over 21 feet including bike racks and hitch attachments are refused even with a valid reservation, and RVs and trailers are banned outright.
- Print or download the QR code. Connectivity in the park is unreliable and the ranger scans it.
- Free changes to another date or time before your reserved slot, and please cancel if you cannot use it.
- No Island Explorer bus serves the Cadillac Summit Road, so it is your car, a bike, your legs, or a taxi.
Budget-friendly ways around and in
- Island Explorer buses are fare-free, propane-powered, and connect hotels and village centers with park destinations. Route 3 runs between the Bar Harbor Village Green (Main Street and Mount Desert Street, Open in maps ↗) and Sand Beach. In the fall schedule the last bus leaves the Village Green at 3:50 PM and the last one leaves Sand Beach at 4:20 PM, so it works nicely for a morning Ocean Path walk with an afternoon return. No ticket to buy, just board.
- Price comparison for the Ocean Path morning: driving and parking at Sand Beach costs you nothing beyond your pass but the lot fills by mid-morning, the Island Explorer is $0 and drops you at the trailhead, and a guided small-group tour of the same coastline is from $139 per person. Take the free bus and keep the $278 for lobster.
- Sightseeing plus transport combo: there is no hop-on hop-off product worth recommending here, the fare-free Island Explorer already is one.
- Skip the $70 Acadia annual pass and the $80 America the Beautiful pass unless you are visiting other federal sites within 12 months. For one 3-day trip, the $35 vehicle pass is the right buy.
Checklist
- Recreation.gov account created and logged in before the release alarm
- Cadillac Sunrise reservation for September 26, printed plus screenshot
- $35 entrance pass bought online and printed for the windshield
- Hotel confirmation, King Room, 2 nights
- Warm layers, hat, gloves, windproof shell, headlamp, thermos
- Sturdy shoes with grip, exposed granite is slippery when wet
- Downloaded offline maps, do not rely on cell service in the park
- Credit or debit card for all park payments, Acadia does not take cash
- Tide information for Thunder Hole and the Bar Island sandbar
- Full tank before Ellsworth, gas on the island is pricier
Estimated costs for 2 adults
| Item | Estimate |
|---|---|
| Lodging, 2 nights, Bar Harbor Grand, King Room | $340 to $520 (guide value, check the exact date price with the provider) |
| Acadia entrance pass, private vehicle, 7 days | $35 |
| Cadillac Sunrise vehicle reservation | $6 |
| Optional Cadillac Daytime reservation for Sunday | $6 |
| Gas, Portland round trip about 350 miles | $40 to $55 |
| Lobster dinner for two at Stewman's, plus tax and 15 to 20 percent tip | $110 to $150 |
| Casual meals: 1 dinner, 2 lunches, snacks, popovers, plus tax and tip | $120 to $170 |
| Parking in town | $0 at the hotel, free parking included |
| Total | about $660 to $945 |
Honest budget reality: your $900 holds if the room lands at or below roughly $230 per night and you keep to one splurge dinner. If room rates come back at $280 per night for foliage weekend, you are looking at about $1,000, and the cleanest lever is food, not lodging: a lobster roll at lunch instead of a full lobster dinner saves roughly $50 for two. Taking the fare-free Island Explorer instead of any guided tour is already saving you about $278, which is the single biggest reason this trip fits at all.

Frequently asked questions
How does the Cadillac Mountain sunrise reservation work?
A $6 per vehicle reservation is required for Cadillac Summit Road from May 20 through October 25, 2026. Thirty percent of Sunrise and Daytime slots release 90 days ahead at 10:00 AM ET, the remaining 70 percent release two days ahead at 10:00 AM ET.
Can I get more than one Cadillac sunrise reservation on a multi night trip?
No. Sunrise reservations are limited to one per vehicle per seven days, so with one car this sample two night plan gets exactly one summit sunrise, on the Saturday. Daytime reservations are capped at one per vehicle per day instead.
What does a Cadillac sunrise weekend in Bar Harbor cost?
This sample plan budgets about $700 to $900 for two people, including $340 to $520 for two nights of lodging, the $35 seven day park entrance pass, and the $6 Sunrise reservation, plus one $45 to $60 per person lobster dinner.
