Friday, October 9, 2026: arrive, walk the route, pinball

Afternoon. Aim to be parked by 4:00 PM. Both crews check in, drop bags, and start the downtown brewery walk on foot. No cars for the rest of the night.

The route (about 1.7 miles total, all flat, roughly 8 to 12 minutes between stops):

1. Founders Brewing Co., 235 Cesar E. Chavez Ave SW, taproom (616) 776-1195. Friday hours 11:00 AM to 11:00 PM. The beer hall that put Beer City on the map, big tables, loud, perfect first stop. Map
2. HopCat, on Ionia Ave SW, (616) 451-4677. Friday 11:00 AM to 12:00 AM, happy hour 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM with select drafts at $4 to $6 and 50 percent off select shareables, and again from 9:00 PM to close. Their Cosmik Fries are the local rite of passage. Map
3. The Pyramid Scheme, 68 Commerce Dr SW. Friday 4:00 PM to 2:00 AM. Craft beer up front, 24 well maintained coin operated pinball machines in the back, plus live music most nights (tickets via TicketWeb). This is your retro arcade slot, and it is free to walk in. Map
4. Optional nightcap across the Blue Bridge on Bridge Street NW, where New Holland Brewing's Knickerbocker (417 Bridge St NW) and Jolly Pumpkin (428 Bridge St NW) sit two doors apart. Check their hours before you cross.

Dinner: HopCat around 6:30 PM, hearty burgers and bar food, easiest place in town to seat 6 without ceremony on a Friday.

💡 Tip: Bring a roll of quarters or hit an ATM before Pyramid Scheme. The pinball machines are coin operated, and nothing kills a high score run like six guys queuing at the change machine.

Plan B (rain or cold): The whole Friday route can be done in three indoor stops with the free DASH shuttle between them, buses every 8 minutes, no fare. Skip the Bridge Street crossing and stay in the Founders to HopCat to Pyramid Scheme triangle.

Saturday, October 10, 2026: the real program day

9:30 AM. Breakfast at the hotel or a diner, then walk over toward Cesar Chavez Ave.

Late morning: Founders facility tour. Founders runs guided tours of their downtown production facility on Saturdays in the late morning, typically two slots before noon plus a combined tour and tasting shortly after midday. Cost is in the range of approx. $10 to $16 per person for the plain facility tour and approx. $30 for the tour plus guided tasting, and the exact slot times and current price show in the booking widget on the Founders tour page. Confirm both before booking, and note that every guest must be 21 or older. Plan roughly one hour.

12:30 PM: lunch at the Founders taproom. Kitchen open with the taproom, Saturday 11:00 AM to 11:00 PM. Elevated deli sandwiches and salads, exactly the "line your stomach" food you want before a tour with 12 samples on it.

Afternoon: Beer City Experience Tour, $70 per person. Grand Rapids Beer Tours picks up in front of the central bus station at 250 Cesar E. Chavez Ave SW, directly across the street from Founders. Arrive 10 minutes before the posted start. The tour runs 3 hours, visits Founders, Harmony Brewing Co. and Kusterer Brauhaus, includes 3 to 4 large samples at each stop (12 total, roughly 48 ounces, about $30 worth of beer), takes you behind the scenes at one of the brewery stops, and includes merchandise discounts at most breweries. Food is not included. Their public van holds 6 passengers, so your group either fills a public departure exactly or books a private tour on (616) 901-9719. 💡 Tip: Park in the Founders lot behind and just south of the brewery. The first 2 hours are free with a food or beer purchase if a bartender validates your ticket, and street meters are free on Saturdays and Sundays. Even so, the smart move is to leave the cars at the hotel all weekend.

6:00 PM: the active slot, private axe lane at BattleGR. 284 Dodge Court NE, Suite 100, Comstock Park, phone (616) 345-0698, about 8 miles from downtown, roughly 15 minutes by car or rideshare. A 60 minute private axe throwing lane is $134 for up to 6 throwers, which is your whole crew on one lane with a coach, no strangers mixed in. A shared lane is $29 per person, and a combo pass with two activities (axe throwing, laser tag or archery tag, one hour of each) is $50.50 per person if you want to double down. Closed toe shoes are mandatory, a 50 percent deposit is due at booking, and reservations are effectively required because they are reservation based and may not open without one. Map

Alternatives for the same slot, same venue, same booking line: VR game session, $150 per group of 6 for 30 minutes, or the VR escape room, $240 per group of 6 for 60 minutes. If you would rather not leave downtown at all, keep the active slot as a pinball tournament at The Pyramid Scheme (Saturday 1:00 PM to 2:00 AM), no booking, no transfer, just quarters and trash talk.

8:00 PM: Saturday dinner and the reservation reality. This is the honest part. Founders' taproom does not take table reservations for a normal Saturday night, it is walk in seating in a large beer hall, and their bookable space is the separate Centennial Room for private events. On a Saturday in October, six guys walking in at 8:00 PM will wait, or will split across two high tops. Two ways to beat it:

• Recommended: book HopCat for 6 through their reservation form or by calling (616) 451-4677. Saturday hours 10:00 AM to 12:00 AM, they also run private and semi private spaces for groups. Then do Founders after dinner, when standing at the bar with a barrel aged stout is the point anyway.
• Or: send two guys to Founders at 6:45 PM to claim a long table while the others finish at BattleGR. Old trick, still works.

💡 Tip: For a party of 6, most Grand Rapids brewpubs will hold a table only with a phone call, not through an app. Call on the Tuesday before, ask for "6 at 8:00 PM", and confirm the same day. Tip 18 to 20 percent, a group of six is real work for one server.

Plan B (heavy rain): Everything on Saturday is already indoors or in a van. If a storm cancels the van tour, swap in the Founders tour plus tasting slot and a self guided version of the Friday walking route using the free DASH shuttle.

Sunday, October 11, 2026: slow start, one last pint, drive home

10:00 AM. Late breakfast. 11:00 AM: optional last stop. The Grand Rapids Public Museum (272 Pearl St NW) is a genuinely good rainy morning option with a working 1928 carousel and a planetarium, general admission around $14 for adults, confirm the current price and hours at grpm.org before you go. Or take the riverside walk over the Blue Bridge and back, free, 30 minutes, good for six sets of Saturday legs.

Noon: last pint and lunch at Founders (Sunday 11:00 AM to 9:00 PM) or HopCat (Sunday 10:00 AM to 10:00 PM), then roll out. Detroit crew home by about 4:00 PM, Chicago crew by about 4:00 PM local time after the hour gained.

💡 Tip: Pack an empty cooler in each car. Most Grand Rapids taprooms sell cans and bottles to go, and the beer tour van even carries a cooler for purchases made along the route.

Plan B (nasty weather): Skip the outdoor walk and drive straight home. Michigan lake effect weather in October can turn a pleasant 55 degree morning into sideways rain by noon.

Budget reality check, no sugar coating. Your $450 per person is a fair weekend budget for Grand Rapids, but it is not a $450 weekend at the Amway Grand with two full dinners and a $70 tour. Three levers get you back inside the line: take the Courtyard or CityFlats instead of the Amway (saves roughly $45 to $60 per person), keep Saturday's brewery beers to four rather than eight (saves $30 or so), and take the free tour plus tasting decision seriously, the plain $10 Founders tour is plenty when you already have 12 samples coming that afternoon. Do all three and six guys land around $420 to $470 each. Also worth knowing: getting between downtown venues costs nothing thanks to the DASH shuttle, while a rideshare to BattleGR and back runs roughly $50 to $70 for the group split six ways, which is the one paid transfer we recommend and it is about $10 per guy.

Checklist

• Valid state ID or driver's license for every man. The beer tour will turn you away with no refund if you look under 40 and cannot produce one, and Founders tours are 21+ across the board.
• Closed toe shoes for axe throwing, no exceptions at the venue.
