1b) Our recommendation, and the honest alternative
Recommended: Thousand Hills Golf Resort, one bedroom condo (sleeps 4). It hits every hard criterion: a full kitchen with all major appliances, a pull-out sofa sleeper so the 7 and 10 year old have their own space, in-house laundry (a week with kids means laundry, trust us), indoor and outdoor pools, and free use of the fitness room. The resort's own description makes a point of ample parking and a location well away from crowded street noise, which is exactly the "near the Strip but quiet" you asked for, since you are about 4 miles from Branson Landing and roughly 6 miles (about 15 minutes) from Silver Dollar City. Honest budget note: a 7 night stay in Harvest Festival season is the single biggest line in your plan. At the low end of the one bedroom range you have comfortable room for two Silver Dollar City days, one dinner cruise and five meals out. At the top end, something has to give, and our advice would be to drop the dinner cruise rather than the food quality.

2) Day by day
Day 1, Saturday, October 10: drive down, stock the kitchen
Leave Kansas City after breakfast, roughly 215 miles and about 3 hours 45 minutes with one stop. Check in at Thousand Hills, then go straight to the Walmart at 2050 W 76 Country Blvd for the week's groceries (map). First dinner: keep it easy at the condo, tacos or pasta, about $16 for four.
💡 Tip: order a Walmart pickup slot before you leave home, hand over your name, load the trunk, done in 15 minutes instead of an hour of aisle-wrangling with two tired kids.
Plan B (rain): the indoor pool at the resort is open regardless, and the fountain show downtown runs weather permitting only, so save it for a dry evening.
Day 2, Sunday, October 11: Silver Dollar City, day one of two
Aim to be in the parking lot early. Most parking is free, with trams and buses shuttling you to the ticket courtyard. Ride the big stuff first while lines are short, then hit the craftsmen: blacksmithing, glassblowing and pottery demonstrations, master pumpkin carver Barry Brown working live, and the chuck wagon "cookies" competing at Cowboy Camp. From 5:30 PM the newly expanded Plaza runs family dance parties with photo ops, and the Garden of Giants in Wilson's Farm has pumpkins over 1,000 pounds.

💡 Tip: pack sandwiches and fruit from the condo, eat them in the car at lunchtime, then spend your in-park food money on the seasonal Harvest items (pumpkin chili with cornbread, skillets, apple and pumpkin desserts) that you cannot get anywhere else. That is the difference between a food memory and a $14 basket of fries.
Note: guests are not allowed to wear costumes at Silver Dollar City, so leave the Halloween outfits at the condo.
Day 3, Monday, October 12: downtown Branson, real food day
Late breakfast at Farmhouse Restaurant, 119 W Main St, downtown, (417) 334-9701, open daily at 7 AM. Est. 1976, and this is where the sums get pleasant: three fluffy pancakes $7.99, French toast $8.99, two eggs any style $9.99, one biscuit and gravy $4.99, and free refills on soft drinks, coffee and tea (map).
Afterwards walk the Branson Landing promenade and time your visit to the Fountain Show, a free water, light and flame show that starts at noon and runs through the evening at the top of each hour, weather permitting. Kids are allowed to be mesmerised, adults too.
💡 Tip: Farmhouse serves breakfast anytime. A 2:00 PM "breakfast for dinner" run is the cheapest sit-down family meal in town, and the grilled cheese with fries at $7.99 quietly beats every $14 kids' menu on the Strip.
Day 4, Tuesday, October 13: lake day
Morning at the Dewey Short Visitor Center, 4500 State Hwy 165, run by the US Army Corps of Engineers. Free entry, open 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM daily, with interactive exhibits on the dam, water safety and power generation, a 20 minute film, and an overlook where you can see Table Rock Lake, the dam and Lake Taneycomo from one deck (map). From there, walk part of the paved Table Rock Lakeshore Trail, 2.2 miles one way to the State Park Marina, free.
Want to get on the water? State Park Marina rents pontoons, kayaks and more. October rates and hours change with the season and the weather, so call the marina before you drive out and confirm the current price for a half day. Honest alternative that costs nothing: the trail plus the marina docks, and the boats become a spectator sport.
Dinner: Danna's Barbecue and Burger Shop, 963 State Highway 165, the local barbecue institution (map). Plan B (cold or windy): swap the lake for the resort's indoor pool in the afternoon and move the Dewey Short film to the front of the day.
Day 5, Wednesday, October 14: Silver Dollar City, day two
Your second day costs only $20 more per ticket, so use it properly: the rides you queued for on Sunday, the shows you skipped, the Silver Dollar Saloon, live music, comedy and magic, then stay for the illuminated pumpkins after dark, Foggy Hollow's mists and the three-story Pumpkin Greeter.
💡 Tip: the second day must be used within a 5 consecutive operating day period, so Sunday plus Wednesday works, Sunday plus the following Saturday does not.
Plan B (all-day rain): the park's craft demonstrations, indoor shows and shops keep a rainy day worthwhile, and coasters often have their shortest lines of the whole festival in drizzle. Pack cheap ponchos from home, $1 each instead of $10 at the gate.
Day 6, Thursday, October 15: Showboat dinner cruise on Table Rock Lake
One planned splurge, and it does double duty as both your show and your lake time. Silver Dollar City's Showboat, 4800 Historic State Hwy 165 (map), is a scenic cruise with dinner and a family show. General Seating Tier 2 is $69 for ages 12 and up and $49 for ages 4 to 11, plus tax, and Tier 1 (main floor, closest to the stage) is $75 and $55. Ages 3 and under are free. Tickets are picked up at the Showboat box office at cruise time and you should arrive at least 1 hour before your cruise, so confirm your exact departure on the official cruise calendar and build the evening backwards from it. Buy all four seats in one transaction, otherwise you may not be seated together.
💡 Tip: if the rates for your dates push the total past comfort, this is the line to cut. Substitute a $10 grocery-store dessert picnic at the Dewey Short overlook at sunset and a Branson Landing fountain show, cost about $10 versus about $255 with tax, and the kids will not file a complaint.
Day 7, Friday, October 16: slow morning, big brunch, condo evening
Sleep in, swim, then brunch at Billy Gail's, Branson Mill location, 3300 Gretna Rd (map). This is the famous pancake-the-size-of-a-hubcap place, and portions are genuinely shareable, which is the whole trick: plates run roughly in the high teens to mid twenties, so confirm current prices on their menu and plan on splitting rather than ordering four entrées.
