Stay at The Giacomo. It is a restored art deco tower on First Street, so you can leave the car parked overnight and walk to Prospect Point in about 10 minutes, which matters when your best photo windows are at 7:00 AM and 6:30 PM and you do not want to hunt for a parking space in the dark. The hotel serves a complimentary hot breakfast (that is one meal per day off your food budget), does turndown with fresh cookies, and has a Skyview Lounge on the 19th floor for sunset if the wind chases you off the gorge. Guests rate it 8.0/10 on Booking.com from 772 reviews, comfortably above our 7.0 floor, and check-in is 4:00 PM with check-out at 11:00 AM. Realistic guide value for your dates: about $130 to $200 per night plus tax, as of June 2026.

Best alternative: Comfort Inn The Pointe, 1 Prospect Pointe, Niagara Falls, NY 14303. It is rated 7.6/10 from 3,648 reviews on Booking.com and sits even closer to the park entrance, literally across the street from Prospect Point, with a guide value of roughly $110 to $170 per night plus tax (as of June 2026). It is plainer than The Giacomo, but for a trip built around 6:30 AM and 6:30 PM walks, "closest door to the falls" is a real feature.

Second alternative: Wingate by Wyndham Niagara Falls, 333 Rainbow Blvd, rated 7.3/10 on Booking.com, guide value roughly $110 to $160 per night plus tax (as of June 2026), about an 8 minute walk to the park and useful if the other two spike over a fireworks weekend.

All three are private rooms, no dorms, no party chains. If your dates come back above about $190 per night at The Giacomo, take the Comfort Inn and put the difference into dinner.

On the experience: take the Maid of the Mist rather than Cave of the Winds. Both are excellent, but in early October the boat runs a compact 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM day and gives you the head-on Horseshoe view that the US shoreline cannot, while Cave of the Winds mostly amplifies what you can already see for free from Luna Island. If you would rather be soaked from below than sprayed from a deck, swap it, Cave of the Winds is $23 per adult versus $30.25.

2) Day by day

Friday, October 2: arrive, learn the geography, own the sunset

Drive. Buffalo to Niagara Falls State Park is about 21 miles on I-190 N, roughly 30 to 35 minutes outside rush hour. The Grand Island bridges are cashless, so you will be tolled by E-ZPass or plate (a small amount, about $1 to $2 per bridge, confirm your E-ZPass rate). Park staff suggest an alternate approach on Route 62 / Niagara Falls Blvd from I-290 or I-190 when the Niagara Scenic Parkway backs up, and the alternate GPS address 10 Rainbow Blvd, Niagara Falls, NY 14303.

5:15 PM, drive onto Goat Island and park in Lot 2, 15 Goat Island Loop Road ($15 on a Friday until October 11; keep the receipt, it allows same day re-entry if space is free). Open in maps ↗

5:35 PM, Terrapin Point. From Lot 2 it is roughly 0.3 mile on a paved path past the Top of the Falls Restaurant, about 7 minutes on foot. This is the promised five minutes: you are standing on the Canadian rim's opposite shoulder, at the actual crest of Horseshoe Falls, watching the sheet of water bend over the lip a few yards away. At 6:15 PM the low sun comes in from behind your right shoulder and lights the mist column from the side, which is the shot the parking lot railing at Prospect Point never gives you.

6:55 PM, sunset. Stay until about 7:20 PM, the afterglow over the gorge with the Canadian skyline turning on is better than the sunset itself.

8:00 PM, dinner, casual. Wine on Third, 501 3rd Street, Niagara Falls, NY 14301, American and Italian style small plates, wood-fired pizza, pasta, steak and a real cocktail list. Friday hours 3:00 PM to 10:00 PM, phone (716) 589-9463. Open in maps ↗

10:00 PM, free fireworks over the falls, five minutes, nightly through October 12, 2026. Watchable from Prospect Point, a 10 minute walk from the hotel, no ticket, no seat, no queue.

💡 Tip: Terrapin Point spray drifts straight onto your lens in a west wind. Bring a microfiber cloth and shoot in bursts of three, wiping between each. And bring a light rain shell rather than an umbrella, the wind eats umbrellas here.

🌧️ Plan B if it rains: the illumination on the falls actually looks better in drizzle, the low cloud catches the color. Swap the Terrapin walk for the Skyview Lounge on the hotel's 19th floor, then go out for the 10:00 PM fireworks with a hood.

Saturday, October 3: the boat, the islands and the good dinner

6:45 AM, wake up for the best hour of the weekend. Sunrise is 7:16 AM. Walk down to the park (free, always open) and be on Luna Island by 7:05 AM. From Lot 1 or from the Prospect Point walkways it is a short crossing, and from Lot 2 on Goat Island it is roughly 0.25 mile, about 5 to 6 minutes on foot. Luna is the sliver of rock wedged between the American Falls and Bridal Veil Falls, with water dropping away on both sides of you. Early October sun rises almost directly downriver, so at 7:20 AM you get side-lit mist with nobody in the frame. This is the single most underrated stand-on-it viewpoint on the US side.

8:30 AM, breakfast back at the hotel (included).

9:45 AM, Maid of the Mist. Board from the base of the Observation Tower at Prospect Point. The season schedule is daily 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM from September 28, the ticket office opens 30 minutes before the first departure and closes 15 minutes before the last, and boarding is first come first served even with an online ticket, so arriving at 9:45 AM on a Saturday beats arriving at noon by roughly an hour of queue. 12:30 PM, lunch, casual, in-park at the Top of the Falls Restaurant on Goat Island next to Lot 2, or back downtown. Check the current hours on the park's dining page before you commit.

2:30 PM, Three Sisters Islands, the part almost nobody photographs. Park in Lot 3, 50 Goat Island Road, which is free this weekend, because fee collection there ended on September 7, 2026. Open in maps ↗ . From the lot it is about 0.2 mile, 4 to 5 minutes, to the first stone bridge, and about 9 minutes in total to stand on Third Sister. Here you are not looking at a waterfall at all, you are standing in the middle of the upper rapids, with Class-white water tearing past on both sides of a bridge that is barely wider than a car. Walk to the downstream tip of Third Sister and look right: you see the entire river tilting over the edge from behind, which is a perspective no Canadian viewpoint can give you at any price.

4:00 PM, loop the Goat Island perimeter path counterclockwise back toward Terrapin Point, about 1.5 miles all around, roughly 40 minutes at photo pace.

6:15 PM, second golden hour. Today take it from the small overlooks between Terrapin Point and the Cave of the Winds entrance, where the rock ledge lets you shoot the Horseshoe crest with Canada's towers as a silhouette rather than as clutter.

8:00 PM, the nice dinner. Wine on Third, 501 3rd Street, Saturday 3:00 PM to 10:00 PM. It is an intimate room with a curated wine list, and it is the one place downtown where the food is the reason you are there. Reserve. Tip 18 to 20 percent, as normal in the US, and remember that New York sales tax is added on top of menu prices.

💡 Tip: the Three Sisters bridges have no railing worth leaning on in the middle sections and the rock is slick from spray. Grippy shoes, and keep your phone on a strap or in a zipped pocket, the river does not give things back.

🌧️ Plan B if it rains: flip the day. Do Cave of the Winds instead of the sunset walk (you are getting wet anyway, adult $23, last ticket 6:15 PM through October 9, tickets sold only at the attraction or Welcome Center) and move the Three Sisters walk to Sunday morning.

Sunday, October 4: one last quiet hour, then home

7:17 AM, sunrise, Terrapin Point again, alone. Sunday morning before 8:00 AM is the emptiest the crest ever gets. Park free in Lot 3 and walk the 10 minutes along the south rim path rather than paying $15 at Lot 2, that is a real $15 saved for a 5 minute walk.

9:00 AM, breakfast at the hotel, check out by 11:00 AM.

11:00 AM, the honest Canada decision. If you decide to cross for the head-on panorama, the Rainbow Bridge pedestrian walkway starts a few minutes from the hotel and the crossing takes about 10 minutes plus inspection queue, with a small toll payable at the plaza (confirm the current amount at the booth). You need a valid passport, passport card or enhanced driver's license for each of you, both directions, no exceptions, and on a Sunday afternoon the return queue into the US can run 30 to 60 minutes. Our honest verdict for this particular trip: skip it. Everything you asked for is on this side of the river.

12:30 PM, drive back to Buffalo, about 30 to 35 minutes.

💡 Tip: if you have any doubt about the border queue eating your afternoon, do the crossing on foot at 9:00 AM instead of 11:00 AM. Sunday morning is the quietest window of the weekend in both directions.

🌧️ Plan B if it rains: the Aquarium of Niagara at 701 Whirlpool Street is a five minute drive and a dry hour before the road home. Check current admission and hours on the aquarium's own site.

Read this before you book any of the guided combos. Every one of those tours bundles the same two tickets you can buy yourself for $53.25 per person ($30.25 boat plus $23 cave). You are paying $40 to $85 extra per person for a guide and for queue management. On a Saturday in October that can be worth it, but on your $650 budget it is not, which is why the day-by-day plan buys the boat direct at $30.25 and spends the difference on dinner. The illumination and fireworks are already in your Friday and Saturday evenings, so treat the Nightlight tour as a "we want a guide" upgrade, not an addition.

Canada, honestly

Does not need Canada: the crest of Horseshoe Falls at Terrapin Point, Bridal Veil from Luna Island, the upper rapids at Three Sisters, the Hurricane Deck at Cave of the Winds, the Maid of the Mist (the US boat sails into the same basin), the illumination and the fireworks. Does need Canada: the wide head-on picture-book panorama of the Horseshoe with the whole curve in frame, Journey Behind the Falls, and the Skylon Tower view. Passport reality: both of you need a passport book, passport card or enhanced driver's license, in both directions, and the return queue into the US on a weekend afternoon is the real cost, not the toll. For a two night trip built around dawn and dusk light, crossing is optional and we recommend against it.

• Layers: early October evenings by the gorge sit in the 50s Fahrenheit and the wind off the water makes it feel colder
• Print or screenshot your Maid of the Mist ticket, and keep your parking receipt for same day re-entry

Cost overview against your $650

Where it can go wrong, and how to fix it. The only volatile line is the room. If The Giacomo comes back over about $190 per night for your dates, move to Comfort Inn The Pointe or Wingate and you claw back $60 to $100 across two nights. The easy savings after that: use free Lot 3 on Goat Island every day and walk the extra 5 to 8 minutes (saves up to $30), and skip the guided combos in section 2b, which would add $80 to $278 for two people to see exactly the same two attractions.
