Our pick: a 2-bedroom Brett/Robinson condo in Gulf Shores, one building back from the sand. Brett/Robinson has managed rentals on this coast since 1975, books direct with no third-party platform fees, and its own rate guide puts 2-bedroom units at $160 to $220 per night in the September to October window, before taxes and fees (guide value, as of June 2026). Their own advice is the reason we send you one row back: properties one or two buildings off the beach typically cost 10 to 30 percent less while the pools, kitchens and beach walkover stay identical. On a $2,000 all-in budget that discount is the difference between "we can afford chair service all week" and "we can't".

Concrete named candidates inside that portfolio, all with pool and full kitchen: Island Sunrise (Gulf Shores, beachfront, and it is on the Suncoast Beach Service route so chairs are set up right in front of you), Seacrest (Gulf Shores, also served by Suncoast) and Gulf Shores Surf and Racquet Club (short walk, usually the cheapest of the three, extra courts and pool space for the kids). Filter on the Brett/Robinson search page for 2 bedrooms plus "Beach Access" or "Beach Front", and check the current guest rating shown on each unit's page before you confirm; we would not go below 4.0 out of 5 for a family week.

Best alternative: Gulf State Park itself. The park rents cabins on Lake Shelby and cottages, plus 496 improved campsites and a newer RV Resort with clubhouse, playground and direct Backcountry Trail access, and guests of either campground may use the pools and playgrounds at both. Upside: pier sightseeing is free for campground and lodge guests and fishing drops to $7 per adult. Downside: you are not on the Gulf sand, and cabin nights in October run higher than a shoulder-season condo, so the budget math gets tighter, not looser. 2) Day by day, with the parent break named out loud

A note on the honesty of this plan: every day has one named off-duty adult. "Off duty" means physically elsewhere or under an umbrella with headphones, not "watching from ten feet away". Two days give you a both-off window, purchased with screen time or a state park naturalist.

Saturday, October 3 · Arrival and the 4:00 PM reset

Leave Birmingham after breakfast, plan on 4.5 to 5 hours plus one stop. Groceries first, condo second: hit the store before check-in so the kitchen is stocked and nobody has to leave again. Kids straight into the pool while the bags come up.

Then the very first parent break: Dad off duty 4:00 PM to 5:30 PM while Mom takes both kids to the pool. Straight swap at 5:30 PM, Mom off 5:30 PM to 7:00 PM. Dinner is condo pasta, not a restaurant, on purpose.

💡 Tip: the Coastal Alabama Farmers and Fishermen's Market in Foley runs Saturdays 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM year-round, roughly 20 miles and 30 minutes north of the beach. If you leave Birmingham early, it is an excellent shrimp-and-produce stop directly on your route in, and it is free to browse.

Plan B if the drive runs late: skip the market, use a supermarket near AL-59 in Gulf Shores, and move both parent-break slots to Sunday morning.

Sunday, October 4 · Chair service day, both parents get a window

Walk to the beach at 9:00 AM, which is exactly when Suncoast sets the chairs out. Rent your set on the beach from the attendant: one set of 2 chairs plus 1 umbrella costs $45 for one day, $150 for four consecutive days or $255 for seven, and those prices already include sales tax. Chairs come in at 5:00 PM. A tip of 10 to 20 percent of the rental is customary for the attendant.

Buy 4 days ($150), not 7. You have two outing days plus a rain buffer, so 7 days of chairs is money in the sand.

Parent break: Mom off 10:00 AM to 11:30 AM (walk east toward the pier and back, no children), then Dad off 11:30 AM to 1:00 PM. Afternoon both-off window: the 6- and 9-year-old dig at the water line inside your umbrella zone, one parent supervising from the chair while the other naps in the second chair. Sunday means the Nature Center is closed, so nothing pulls you off the beach.

💡 Tip: your condo is your best friend at 3:00 PM. Coming up for a quiet hour of AC, showers and a book beats stretching the beach day until everyone is fried.

Plan B for wind or rain: condo pool plus the Backcountry Trail in Gulf State Park on foot or bike (free, sunrise to sunset), and shift the chair rental start to Monday. Refunds are only given if service is not provided for the whole day, so decide before you pay.

Monday, October 5 · Outing 1 of 3: Nature Center and Lake Shelby paddle

Drive into Gulf State Park mid-morning. Nature Center, 22120 Campground Rd, open Monday to Saturday 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM, entry free, with a $2 per vehicle fee to enter the campground it sits in. It is a living museum of native Gulf Coast plants and animals with a naturalist on duty, and it is the anchor of your kids programming. Program times change month to month, so call the Nature Center at (251) 948-7275 ext. 62093 about two weeks out and write the times on your fridge. Note that the Learning Campus (20249 State Park Rd) is a different location from the Nature Center, so read program listings carefully.

Then Lake Shelby with Gulf Adventure Center: one double kayak at $18 per hour plus tax takes one parent and one child, and a single kayak at $10 per hour plus tax takes the other pair. Paddleboards are $21 per hour plus tax if the 9-year-old wants a wobbly challenge. That is under $30 of family fun for an hour on flat freshwater.

Parent break: while one parent paddles with both kids on the double plus single combo for the second hour, the other parent is off 12:00 PM to 1:30 PM at the shaded covered picnic areas by the lake. Evening swap: the paddling parent is off 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM after dinner.

Tuesday, October 6 · Beach morning, early movie evening (the cheapest evening of the week)

Chairs are yours from 9:00 AM. Pure beach morning, lunch back at the condo.

Late afternoon, drive about 10 miles east (roughly 20 minutes) to The Wharf in Orange Beach for an early show at AMC CLASSIC Wharf 15, 23151 Wharf Lane. Tuesday and Wednesday are the discount days here, with tickets advertised around $6 per person, so a family of four gets in for roughly $24 plus tax. Confirm the exact price and showtimes on the AMC page the day before, since discount programs change.

Parent break, this is your big one: both parents are off for the length of the film, sitting in the dark next to two happy kids with popcorn. Bonus slot beforehand, Mom off 3:00 PM to 4:30 PM while Dad handles pre-movie snacks and sunscreen removal.

💡 Tip: The Wharf's Ferris wheel is right there, 112 feet tall, advertised at $8 per person with the youngest riding free (confirm at the ticket window). One ride before the movie is a five-minute wow that costs less than a round of drinks.

Wednesday, October 7 · Pier morning, longest solo break of the week

Walk or drive to the Gulf State Park Fishing and Education Pier. It is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and in your window (after Labor Day until November 1) staff are on site daily 6:00 AM to 8:00 PM. Fees, straight from the park: all-day parking $15 for a personal vehicle, all-day sightseeing $3 per adult with children 11 and under free, all-day fishing $10 per adult with children 11 and under free, and rod and reel rentals $10 for 4 hours. Useful detail that saves you money: a paid daily parking fee already includes either one daily fishing permit or three sightseeing admissions, so with your $15 parking, one adult and both kids walk on free and the second adult pays $3, or the fishing adult is covered and the second adult pays $10.

Both kids fish free. Rent one rod for $10 and take turns. Comfort stations sit at the pier midpoint and there is covered seating, which matters at 11:00 AM.

Parent break: Dad off 9:30 AM to 12:00 PM, the longest single slot of the week, back at the condo or on a beach chair while Mom runs the pier with the kids. Reverse it 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM.

Beach morning with your chairs (day 4 of the 4-day pass if you started Sunday). Lunch at a seafood shack: Sea-N-Suds Restaurant and Oyster Bar, 409 East Beach Blvd, right on the sand, open Tuesday to Sunday 11:00 AM to 9:00 PM and closed Mondays, phone (251) 948-7894. Casual Gulf seafood since the mid-1970s, gumbo, oysters on the half shell, steamed shrimp, a salad bar and a proper kids menu (burger, popcorn shrimp, grilled cheese, corn dog nuggets), and mullet specials on Tuesdays and Fridays. You can step off the deck onto the sand, which is exactly what a 6-year-old needs after eating.

Real dinner number one, alternative if you would rather keep the evening in Gulf Shores: Tacky Jacks, 240 E 24th Ave, Gulf Shores, (251) 948-8881, waterfront decks on the Intracoastal, breakfast through dinner, live music. Call to confirm current hours before you go.

Parent break: Mom off 2:00 PM to 3:30 PM. Then at dinner, both parents are off cooking duty and off dishwashing duty, which in a self-catering week is a genuine break with a price tag of about $80 to $100 for lunch plus a tip of 15 to 20 percent.

💡 Tip: order one large shared appetizer and two kids meals instead of four entrees. Portions here are Gulf Coast sized and you will still walk out full.

Option A, Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo, 20499 Oak Road East, roughly 6 miles and 12 minutes north of the beach, open daily approximately 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM with admission in the region of $20 per adult and $15 per child ages 3 to 12, so about $70 for your four. Confirm the current prices, hours and any animal-encounter add-on fees on the zoo's own site before you drive over.

Option B, free: bikes or feet on the Gulf State Park Backcountry Trail (trails open sunrise to sunset), butterfly garden, and the Lake Shelby picnic area. Costs nothing but the $2 campground vehicle fee if you park inside.

Evening: Pirate's Island Adventure Golf, 3201 Gulf Shores Pkwy, (251) 968-4653, open 10:00 AM to 10:00 PM daily. Expect around $16 per adult and $12 per child ages 4 to 12 for 18 holes, with 36-hole and unlimited-play upgrades available; confirm at the window, prices change season to season. A pirate ship, two treasure caves and a tidal lagoon beat any 8:00 PM bedtime argument.

Parent break: Dad off 1:00 PM to 2:30 PM, Mom off 2:30 PM to 4:00 PM. Mini-golf is a both-parents-relaxed activity: you walk 18 holes slowly while the kids run ahead.

Honest headline first: we searched GetYourGuide for this stretch of coast and no bookable, platform-rated tour cleared our quality bar of at least 4.6 out of 5 with at least 50 ratings. The Orange Beach dolphin and sailing catamaran cruise, for example, shows a strong 4.7 but from fewer than 20 ratings, which is not enough evidence for us to spend your money on. So this list is deliberately local, cheap and mostly free, and everything paid comes from the operator's own price page.

What "free" really means here: the park programs and trails genuinely cost nothing beyond the $2 vehicle fee, there is no tip expected and no upsell. If you do book a tip-based tour elsewhere on the coast, budget $10 to $20 per person, and check the individual guide's rating rather than the company's.

Getting there and getting around

Your own car is the right call, there is no useful public transit between the beach, the park and Orange Beach. Birmingham to Gulf Shores is about 270 miles, roughly 4.5 to 5 hours via I-65 south to Bay Minette and then AL-59 south. Inside the destination: condo to Gulf State Park Pier about 3 miles, condo to the Nature Center about 4 miles, condo to The Wharf in Orange Beach about 10 miles or 20 minutes, condo to the zoo about 6 miles or 12 minutes, condo to Foley about 12 miles or 20 minutes.

Cheap-versus-paid comparison, since parking is the sneaky cost here: at the pier and the beach pavilion, all-day parking is $15 for a personal vehicle. Walking or biking from a beachfront condo to the pier costs $0. Entering the campground for the Nature Center costs $2 per vehicle. An annual park parking permit is $200, which makes no sense for one week. Bottom line, choose lodging within walking distance of sand and you will pay park parking exactly once or twice all week.

Food plan

Breakfasts and four dinners in the condo kitchen, which the rental manager itself flags as the single biggest saving lever, worth several hundred dollars over a week for a family of four. Two seafood shack lunches and two real dinners out. Tip 15 to 20 percent at restaurants, and 10 to 20 percent of the rental price for your beach chair attendant.

Honest reading of that number: on a $2,000 all-in budget with a 7-night 2-bedroom condo, you land within a rounding error of the line, not comfortably under it. Three levers, pick one:

1. Land the condo at $150 per night or less instead of $165 by taking a beach-access rather than beachfront unit, or by shifting a night midweek, which the manager itself flags as consistently cheaper. Saves $100 to $150.
2. Take 3 days of chair service instead of 4 ($115 instead of $150). Saves $35, and honestly, one day of your own chairs is fine.
3. Drop mini-golf or the movie, not both. Saves $44 to $56.

Optional add-ons if the condo lands cheap: the zoo at about $70 for four, and the Ferris wheel at about $32 for four. Both are nice, neither is load-bearing for this trip.
