Note for grown-ups: the Yampah Mineral Baths area becomes adults-only after 5:00 PM, which is exactly when you will want it.

Plan B (rain or a canyon closure on I-70): stop in Frisco or Vail for lunch and let the traffic clear, arrive later and make the pool your evening rather than your afternoon. The pool runs in the rain, only lightning pauses it.

Day 2, Tuesday, September 15, 2026: Hanging Lake, the real thing

Your permit slot: 8:00 AM, arrival within 30 minutes of it, 3-hour hiking window. Leave the hotel around 7:15 AM, drive east on I-70 about 10 miles and take exit 125 directly into the Hanging Lake rest area. Show your permit, park (parking is included in the $12 per person), use the trailhead restrooms because there are none on the trail.

Then the climb: 1.2 miles, 1,200 feet, seven bridges, rocky steps at the start and at the top, about 2 hours up and 1 hour down. At the top, take the spur to Spouting Rock, the waterfall that shoots straight out of the cliff face 200 feet above the lake, and walk behind it. No swimming, no wading, not a toe, and no pets, service animals excepted, and pets cannot be left in the car either.

Back in town by early afternoon: lunch and then a second soak. Today keep it cheap and use your Glenwood Hot Springs re-entry logic or simply nap. Evening: casual food downtown.

💡 Tip: the drive back has no westbound exit at Hanging Lake and no eastbound re-entry problem, but if you overshoot on the way out, you must run to Grizzly Creek exit 121 and turn back east to 125. Set your navigation to "Hanging Lake Rest Area, I-70 exit 125" and ignore any route that says "westbound exit".

Plan B (thunderstorm, canyon debris-flow closure, or the trail is a waterslide): the permit cannot be refunded or moved inside 48 hours, so this is about safety, not money. Swap to the Grizzly Creek program from Day 3 and try Hanging Lake with a fresh $24 permit on Wednesday morning if a slot is open, morning slots often free up 24 to 48 hours out. Check the canyon recreation path and canyon status the evening before with CDOT Region 3, 970-243-2368 ext. 9, Monday to Friday.

Day 3, Wednesday, September 16, 2026: Canyon day, then the nice dinner

Choose your one big goal, both fit the "movement then hot water" rhythm:

Option A, free and quiet: Grizzly Creek Trail. Take I-70 east to exit 121, Grizzly Creek rest area, park in the upper lot. No permit, no fee. The trail follows the creek upstream, roughly 3.5 to 4 miles out and back to the pleasant turnarounds, steadily uphill, and some sections still show scars from the Grizzly Creek Fire. Turn around whenever you have had enough, this is a "hike as much as you like" trail.

Option B, wow-factor: Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park. The Glenwood Gondola is the only way up. Gondola only $32.99 online, $37.99 at the gate. Gondola & Cave (Fairy Cave or Kings Row) $52.99 online, $57.99 at the gate, and $10 more if you want both caves. Online adds a $1.50 per item processing fee, reservations are not required, and the ticket window closes 30 minutes before the park closes. Tickets stay valid for 14 days if wind closes the gondola.

Late afternoon: Iron Mountain Hot Springs, 281 Centennial St (970-945-4766), open daily 9:00 AM to 10:00 PM. Select Access $43 to $75, Premier Access for 21+ $75 to $125 including the Sauna Summit, the WorldSprings pools, cold plunges and The Meadow lounging area. Your one nice dinner: The Pullman, 330 7th St (970-230-9234), refined New American, listed dinner service from 4:30 PM, please confirm the hours when you reserve. Alternative for the nice night: Riviera Supper Club & Scratch Kitchen, 702 Grand Ave, also downtown, also worth a jacket, check the opening hours before visiting. Tip 18 to 20 percent, Colorado sales tax is added on top of menu prices.

💡 Tip: soak first, dine second. Iron Mountain is a 12-minute walk or a 3-minute drive from downtown, and nothing improves a tasting-menu appetite like 104-degree mineral water.

Plan B (heavy rain or high wind): the gondola stops for wind and lightning, typically 45 to 90 minutes, and there is no alternative way up the mountain. On a windy forecast, pick Option A, or skip both and go straight into a long Iron Mountain afternoon, the pools are open in rain.

Day 4, Thursday, September 17, 2026: a short legend, then home

Check-out 11:00 AM. Before you leave, walk the free Doc Holliday Trail to Linwood Cemetery, trailhead at 12th and Bennett Ave. Smooth dirt, steep for the first 50 yards or so, then a moderate quarter-mile incline to the cemetery and a nice view over town. Nobody knows exactly where Doc lies, which is somehow very Doc. Coffee downtown, then I-70 east and home.

💡 Tip: the cemetery gate closes at dusk, so a morning visit is the right call anyway. Wear the hiking shoes one last time, the trail is dirt and loose in spots.

Plan B (wet morning): swap the cemetery for one last hour in the Glenwood Hot Springs pool, which opens early and re-entry stamps make a 45-minute soak entirely reasonable before a 3-hour drive.

There are no free walking tours or free museum days in Glenwood Springs worth sending you to. In a town this size, the free program is the canyon itself, and that is a fair trade.

The permit logic in one breath. Permit, not shuttle. There is no shuttle any more, you drive yourself, the $12 per person includes your parking spot, you show the permit at the rest area, and the only other legal way in is your own bike on the canyon path or a drop-off in a private car (not a rideshare) with pickup completed by 4:00 PM. If you see an old blog telling you to catch a bus from Glenwood, it is out of date.

Altitude and legs. The lake sits at 7,323 ft and you gain 1,200 ft in a mile. Coming from Denver you are already acclimatized, but drink more than feels necessary, at least a half liter per hour of hiking.

Weather in mid-September. Warm days, cold mornings in the canyon, and afternoon thunderstorms are still possible. Morning slots are safer, drier and less crowded, which is another reason for the 8:00 AM start.

Cheaper ways to do the same trip. Driving your own car is the plan, but for the record the Bustang West Line runs from Denver Union Station (1701 Wynkoop St) to the stop on 7th Street in Glenwood Springs, directly across from Hotel Maxwell Anderson, with a one-way fare in the twenty-to-thirty-dollar range, buy online or in the Bustang app, confirm the current fare and timetable at ridebustang.com before booking. Without a car, though, Hanging Lake becomes hard: no rideshare drop-offs are allowed. In town everything in this plan except Hanging Lake and the Caverns base is walkable, so you can leave the car parked for two full days. Sightseeing savings: one paid soak per day instead of two saves roughly $90 per day for the pair, and picnic lunches from a grocery store instead of restaurant lunches save $30 to $40 a day.

The combination that lands you at roughly $1,050 to $1,120 is the Cedar Lodge or a lower-rate night at Hotel Maxwell Anderson, one paid soak per day rather than two, picnic lunches, and skipping the Caverns. If you want the downtown hotel at its higher rate plus both hot springs plus the gondola plus the nice dinner, you are looking at $1,350 to $1,450, and the honest advice is to drop the Caverns first, it is the one item that duplicates the "wow" you already get at Hanging Lake. Sales tax is added on top of the posted lodging, ticket and menu prices in Colorado.
