Weis Vineyards and Domaine LeSeurre sit about 0.2 miles away, Watkins Glen is 19 miles. Guide value as of June 2026: about $218 average per night as shown on the Evolve listing, so roughly $1,500 for seven nights before fees and tax. Honest note on quality: the Evolve page shows 4 out of 5 from 6 guest reviews, with praise for the setting and location and criticism about dated appliances, kitchen equipment and road noise from Route 54. Leave New York City by 7:30 AM to be at the lake for late afternoon. Roughly 265 miles, about 4 hours 45 minutes without stops, via I-80 west, I-380 and I-81 north, then Route 17 / I-86 west to the Bath exit. Stock the kitchen in Bath (supermarkets on Route 54 just off the interstate, about 8 miles from Hammondsport), then grill on the patio and light the fire pit.

💡 Tip: buy the whole week's breakfast and lunch supplies today. With a full kitchen, groceries are the single biggest lever on this budget, roughly $45 per day for four instead of $110 in restaurants.

Wednesday, August 19: town day in Ithaca, with a 215-foot waterfall on the way

Drive about 55 miles, roughly 1 hour 15 minutes, up the west side of Cayuga Lake to Taughannock Falls State Park, 1740 Taughannock Boulevard, Trumansburg, $10 per vehicle, collected daily sunrise to sunset with pay stations when no attendant is present, park office (607) 539-4078. The gorge trail is a flat, wide 3/4-mile walk to a stone amphitheater and a 215-foot vertical drop, one of the highest waterfalls in the Northeast. Swim at the park beach, open daily 11:00 AM to 7:00 PM through Labor Day. Then 10 miles into Ithaca for the town half of the day: the Sciencenter, 601 First Street, hands-on exhibits and an outdoor science playground, general admission $15 per person with free on-site parking (hours vary by season, typically from 10:00 AM Tuesday to Saturday, confirm on the Hours and Pricing page before you drive over). 💡 Tip: state park educators run free gorge tours and nature programs at Taughannock, Watkins Glen, Buttermilk Falls and Robert H. Treman. No registration, no fee beyond parking, and they last about 90 minutes. Ask at the visitor center what is scheduled that morning: it is the best free guiding in the region.

Plan B for rain: flip the order, Sciencenter first, and keep the falls for a dry hour. The Taughannock overlook is a two-minute walk from the upper parking lot if the gorge is too wet for small feet.

Thursday, August 20: the second quiet lake, Owasco

Drive about 80 miles, roughly 1 hour 45 minutes, to Fillmore Glen State Park, 1686 State Route 38, Moravia, at the south end of Owasco Lake, $8 per car, collected daily 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM from June 20 to September 1. It is a compact gorge with five waterfalls, stone bridges and a fraction of the Watkins Glen crowd. Friday, August 21: a small glen, a village, and a proper dinner

Morning trip to Grimes Glen County Park, Naples, about 35 miles and 50 minutes northwest at the south end of Canandaigua Lake: free admission, free parking, open dawn to dusk, and a creek-walk to two waterfalls that kids adore because you hike partly in the water. Wear shoes you do not mind soaking. Plan B for rain: creek-walking in a thunderstorm is a hard no (flash-flood risk in narrow glens). Substitute the Curtiss Museum's restoration shop if you skipped it, or an indoor afternoon of board games and an early tavern dinner.

Saturday, August 22: home

Pack, walk the village square one last time, breakfast or an early ice cream at Crooked Lake Ice Cream Company, 35 Shethar Street, Hammondsport, phone 607-569-2751 (they serve breakfast and lunch as well as ice cream; seasonal hours shift, so check the day before). On the road by 10:00 AM, roughly 265 miles and 4 hours 45 minutes plus stops.

💡 Tip: Sunday afternoons are the region's worst departure traffic on I-86 and I-81. Leaving Saturday morning, you are ahead of it.

Getting around. You have your own car and you will need it: this itinerary covers roughly 400 miles of local driving over six days. There is no useful public transport between these lakes. The two scheduled services worth knowing are the Watkins Glen park shuttle ($6 per person each way, daily June 28 to September 7, stops listed on Monday) and the free Corning museum shuttle.

Where the cheap wins are.

• Empire Pass costs $80 and would only pay off past about eight park visits. Your plan totals roughly $46 in vehicle fees, so skip the pass and pay at the gate.
• Watkins Glen shuttle for four people round trip is $48; walking the rim trail back is free and prettier.
• Free ranger gorge tours instead of a paid guided hike: saves $150 or more for a family of four.
• Kitchen breakfasts and packed lunches versus eating out: roughly $65 a day saved, which is the single biggest number in this whole plan.
• Kids and teens are free at the Rockwell Museum, and at the Curtiss Museum the 6-and-under bracket is free (not applicable to your two, but useful if grandparents tag along, seniors 65+ pay $13).
