It is about 1.5 miles from Hazard Square, so the kids get campfire and s'mores and you still get a five-minute drive to dinner. Honest third property, verified but not recommended: Split Rock Resort in Lake Harmony genuinely sells units built for four. Leave Philadelphia after lunch. About 85 miles and roughly 1 hour 40 minutes gets you to Jim Thorpe. Cabin check-in is between 2:00 PM and 10:00 PM, so anything from mid-afternoon works. Unload, light the fire ring, then head into town for dinner.

💡 Tip: do not drive into the center at peak time hunting for a space. Downtown parking is run by Carbon County and the Visitor Center lot runs $15 to $20 on busy days. Park once at the cabin, then take one short trip in and walk everything, the historic district is about four blocks long.

Day 2, Saturday, September 26, 2026: the adventure day on the Lehigh Gorge Rail Trail

The trip runs about 16 miles round trip into Lehigh Gorge State Park and lasts 70 minutes outside October. The railroad publishes each date's departures on its ticket calendar and specifically confirms that the 1:00 PM train leaves on time, so pick your slot from the calendar for September 27 and arrive at least one hour before departure to park and swap your confirmation email for actual tickets at the booth. Fares: standard coach adult $23, child 3 to 12 $9; open air car adult $25, child $10; Vista-class dome adult $32, child $21; children 2 and under ride free. Restrooms are on all trains, you may bring your own food and drinks (no alcohol), and well-behaved pets ride free.
