12:00 PM, arrival at Austin-Bergstrom (AUS). Head to the lower level just outside baggage claim, where the neon guitar bus stop marks Route 20. It runs every 15 to 30 minutes and takes about 35 minutes to downtown for $1.25 a ride with no surge pricing. Transfer downtown to Route 801 or Route 1 (North Lamar / South Congress) toward South Congress for the last mile. Tap to pay with a phone or card and your whole day is capped at $2.50. Price comparison: CapMetro about $2.50 per person for the day, versus a rideshare van from the airport at roughly $30 to $45 for the whole group (estimate, surge dependent). 6:30 PM, dinner for 6 at Suerte, 1800 East 6th Street, Austin, TX 78702. Mexican cooked around house made masa and Texas ingredients, and the most group friendly of Austin's serious dinner rooms. Friday hours are 5:00 PM to 11:00 PM, Lucky Hour runs Friday 5:00 PM to 6:00 PM if you arrive early for cheaper drinks. The booking window opens 30 days in advance at midnight via Resy, and reservations for up to 8 guests are also listed through OpenTable, so a 6 top is a normal booking, not a favor. Parties of 10 or more move to the omakase private dining room with a food and beverage minimum and a non refundable deposit, which is not you. There is limited onsite parking plus partial validation at the LAZ garage at 1801 East 6th Street, directly across the street. 💡 Tip: buy nothing at the airport. Route 20 arrives downtown with the whole day's fare cap already paid at $2.50, and the first cold michelada is cheaper at your own hotel lounge than anywhere on South Congress.

Plan B (thunderstorm or 100 degree misery): swap pool time for the Courtyard Lounge under cover, then keep dinner exactly as booked. Suerte has indoor seating, so rain changes nothing about Friday except your hair.

Saturday, September 19, 2026: spring water, brisket, then the Rainey Street route

10:30 AM, slow start. Coffee and breakfast tacos again at Jo's, because you will want them again.

11:30 AM, Barton Springs Pool, Zilker Park. Spring fed, cool year round, and the single best hangover intervention in Texas. Adult non resident entry is $9, Austin residents pay $5, and fees are charged from Austin ISD Spring Break through the end of October, so September counts. 5:30 PM, BBQ dinner, walk in, no reservations. Main pick: Terry Black's Barbecue, 1003 Barton Springs Road, counter service by the pound, giant beef ribs, long communal tables that swallow a group of six easily, and it is a 5 minute drive from Barton Springs. Alternative: Franklin Barbecue, 900 East 11th Street, the pilgrimage option, famous line, famously worth it. Both are cafeteria style with no bookings and both close when the meat sells out, so check the current hours on the official site the morning of, and go early rather than fashionably late. We picked Rainey over East 6th on purpose: Rainey is a single short street of converted bungalows with yards, so six people can move as a unit without splitting up in a crowd, and the walk between stops is measured in minutes, not blocks. All three stops are walk in, no reservation, and cash is not required.

Stop 1, 8:15 PM, Lustre Pearl Rainey, 94 Rainey Street, Austin, TX 78701. The bar that started the Rainey scene, big yard, picnic tables, lawn games, easy volume level. Stop 2, 9:45 PM, Container Bar, Rainey Street District. Same Dunlap ATX family, a stack of shipping containers with a different mood on each level, so it is the natural energy step up from a yard bar to a proper night. Stop 3, 11:00 PM, Clive Bar, 609 Davis Street, Austin, TX 78701. Ends the night on cocktails rather than cans, a dark, mezcal leaning bar with a back patio, half a block off the main strip so the crowd thins out. Logistics: Rainey Street to Hotel San José is about 2 miles, roughly 8 minutes by car. If you are out past midnight and feeling thrifty, CapMetro Route 483 Night Owl Riverside runs after midnight until 4:00 AM and ends downtown on 6th Street, $1.25 a ride, but for six people at 1:00 AM one rideshare split is the better call.

💡 Tip: 8:15 PM is not a random start. Rainey yards fill after 9:00 PM and a six person table becomes impossible, so the group that arrives first sits all night. Budget $45 to $70 per person for three stops with tips at 15 to 20 percent per round.

Plan B (rain): Rainey bars are largely yard based, so if the radar looks ugly, invert the order and start at Clive Bar (indoor, covered), then Container Bar's covered levels, and keep Lustre Pearl for a dry window. If it is a full storm, dinner at Terry Black's runs long and the hotel's Courtyard Lounge has covered seating and regular live music evenings.

Sunday, September 20, 2026: brunch, one last dip, fly out

11:00 AM, brunch on South Congress. Main pick: Hotel San José Courtyard Lounge plus Jo's Coffee, both on property, serving daily, zero logistics on a departure day, and a group of six can sprawl in the courtyard. Alternative 1: Bouldin Creek Cafe, 1900 South First Street, the veggie friendly Austin brunch classic, about 1 mile from the hotel, check the opening hours before visiting. Alternative 2: Suerte brunch, 1800 East 6th Street, served Sunday from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM with the kitchen open until 10:00 PM, and Sunday Lucky Hour runs 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM if your flight is late.
