Book the Wilderness Resort (main hotel building). Reasons, in the order that matters to you:

1. Volume of actual water, not one slide. Wilderness runs four indoor waterparks year-round, and your stay includes the passes. Wild WaterDome brings the wave pool and the glass roof (real daylight in late October, a genuinely nice thing when it is 45 °F outside), Klondike Kavern brings the thrill rides and the 400-foot lazy river for the 5-year-old, Wild West brings mat racers plus a big children's play and spray structure, and Cubby's Cove at Wilderness on the Lake is the calm, newly renovated activity pool with basketball hoops and a lily-pad rope challenge. Nobody in your family runs out of water in seven days.
2. Age-split is handled. Your 8-year-old will chase The Hurricane and the mat racers, your 5-year-old gets the lazy river, the play-and-spray zone and the wave pool shallows. Adults get an indoor/outdoor hot spa and two swim-up bars (21+).
3. Money. October weekdays start from $204 per night, and there is an Early Bird offer of up to 20 percent off on stays of 2 or more nights booked at least 45 days in advance, which for an October 25 arrival means booking by roughly September 9, 2026.
4. Honest ratings. Wilderness sits at 3.0 out of 5 on Tripadvisor from about 3,667 reviews, ranked #20 of 66 Wisconsin Dells hotels. That is a mid score, and it is also the highest-ranked of the three big waterpark resorts on that list. Dells mega-resorts get marked down for crowds, worn corridors and slow front desks, not for missing water. We are telling you this rather than pretending it is a five-star property.

Best alternative: Kalahari. If you want the single most impressive indoor park under one roof rather than four spread across a 600-acre territory, Kalahari is it: Master Blaster water coaster, Sahara Sidewinder, Screaming Hyena, Tanzanian Twister, Elephant's Trunk, Victoria Falls and Zig Zag Zebra family rafts, Rippling Rhino, a FlowRider surf simulator, a wave pool, an indoor lazy river, a basketball pool and three kid zones (Leopard's Lair, Lagoon and Tiko's Watering Hole, all for under 54 inches). Kalahari sits at 3.0 out of 5 on Tripadvisor, ranked #27 of 66 in the Dells. Its price tag is higher once you add the mandatory $39.99 plus tax daily resort fee, which over 7 nights is about $280 plus tax before you have bought a single french fry. One more thing to know: a 75,000 sq ft indoor expansion with a retractable roof is under construction and slated to open in fall 2026, so ask at booking whether any of it affects your dates, and treat "brand new park open in October" as unconfirmed until the reservations team says so.

The one we would not lead with: Chula Vista. Lost Rios indoor park has Rio Rapids action river, Rainbow Rapids, Matador Mat Racers, Croc Walk water crossing, Mt. Montezuma's Mayan Temple (500-gallon tipping bucket over a 50-foot deck) and the Incatinka toddler area with mini geysers, small tipping buckets and two sizes of baby slides. It is a real waterpark, not a one-slide fraud, but there is no indoor wave pool and guest scores sit at 6.8 out of 10 from 526 verified Booking.com reviews, which is below the 7.0 bar we hold ourselves to. It earns a place as your budget fallback, not as the pick.

2) Day by day

Day 1, Saturday, October 24: drive and first splash

Leave Minneapolis around 7:30 AM, take I‑94 East, about 190 miles and roughly 3 hours 15 minutes plus one stop, arriving in the Dells around 11:30 AM. Check-in is in the afternoon, but you do not have to wait to swim: park, change in the locker rooms, and get in the water. Afternoon in Wild WaterDome for the wave pool while the daylight is still coming through the roof. Dinner at Buffalo Phil's Pizza & Grille, 150 Gasser Rd, where the food arrives at your table on model trains and there is a large LEGO "Brick City" display, an unbeatable combination for a 5 and an 8-year-old. American and pizza, listed hours 11:00 AM to 9:30 PM Sunday through Thursday and 11:00 AM to 10:30 PM Friday and Saturday, please confirm hours before you go as off-season times shift. 💡 Pack your own towels and life jackets. Kalahari lends life jackets free and Wilderness has them at each park, but bringing your own child-sized vests you already trust saves twenty minutes of hunting at 10:00 AM.

Plan B (rain or early snow on I‑94): leave later, drive in daylight, and swap the afternoon session for an evening one. All four indoor parks are weatherproof.

Day 2, Sunday, October 25: the thrill park

Slow breakfast, then Klondike Kavern for the morning: The Hurricane family raft ride, Mine Shaft body slide, Claim Jumpers Challenge tube slide, and the 400-foot lazy river for the little one when arms get tired. Afternoon: Wild West, whose mat racers with translucent tunnel effects are the single most requested repeat ride by the 8-year-old demographic. Evening: quiet dinner in the resort, or reheat something from your grocery run.

💡 Do the thrill rides between 10:00 AM and noon. Queues at every Dells indoor park build sharply from about 1:00 PM, and Sunday is a changeover day when weekend guests get one last ride before checkout.

Day 3, Monday, October 26: outing to Devil's Lake State Park

Drive about 22 miles, roughly 35 minutes south to Devil's Lake State Park near Baraboo. Late October is peak bare-bluff-and-lake-mist season, the crowds are gone, and the Tumbled Rocks Trail along the west shore is flat, stroller-friendly and perfect for a 5-year-old. Ambitious families with an 8-year-old who likes scrambling can do part of the East Bluff Trail instead. Vehicle admission is a state requirement: the Wisconsin DNR's current daily pass is $13 for vehicles with Wisconsin plates and $16 for out-of-state plates, so budget $16 for your Minnesota plates and confirm the 2026 figure at the DNR link before you drive. 💡 Buy the park pass online before you leave the hotel. The Devil's Lake entrance booths are often unstaffed in late October and rangers check dashboards in the parking lots.

Plan B (steady rain or ice): skip the hike, do downtown Dells instead: the riverside walk, the candy and souvenir shops on Broadway, then a long afternoon in the waterpark and Monk's for dinner as planned.

Day 4, Tuesday, October 27: full lazy day, wave pool and hot spa

No car, no plans. Morning in Wild WaterDome (wave pool sessions run in cycles, so hang around when the horn sounds), afternoon split between the kids' play and spray structure and the indoor/outdoor hot spa in Wild West for the grown-ups. Evening: Moosejaw Pizza & Dells Brewing Co., 110 Wisconsin Dells Pkwy S, a three-level brewpub with a large arcade, house microbrews for the adults and pizza with dough made in-house. 💡 Tuesday is the quietest day of your week. If you want one splurge, this is the day for a poolside cabana, and it is also the day the ride queues are effectively zero.

Day 5, Wednesday, October 28: Cubby's Cove and a calm reset

Head to Wilderness on the Lake for Cubby's Cove, the newly renovated indoor park with an activity pool with basketball hoops, a lily-pad rope challenge and a brand new play feature, plus an indoor/outdoor hot spa looking over Lake Delton. It is smaller and much calmer than the big three, which is exactly what day five of a waterpark week needs. Afternoon: arcade time and the WildKids Club activities. Dinner in.

💡 Pace the week deliberately: two heavy water days, then a light one. The classic Dells mistake is three back-to-back 11-hour water days followed by four days of tired, cranky children.

Day 6, Thursday, October 29: Halloween week dinner show

Water in the morning, then the Halloween-season Monster Mash Spooktacular at Dells Dinner Adventures, where Wilderness guests get a $50 exclusive credit. Prices and showtimes are on the operator's page, so check them and book before you arrive. If the dinner show does not appeal, the fallback is a pizza-and-arcade night at Moosejaw.

💡 Ask the front desk for the day's printed activity schedule each morning. Both Wilderness and Kalahari run free daily family activities, and they are not always advertised beyond that sheet.

Plan B (a kid is done with crowds): in-room movie night with delivery, and use the evening waterpark hours instead when the parks empty out after 7:00 PM.

Day 7, Friday, October 30: favorites tour and last thrills

Revisit whatever won the week. Practical note: weekend guests start arriving around noon on Friday, so front-load the morning. If your 8-year-old is at least 48 inches tall and you have gone the Kalahari route, this is the day for a FlowRider session (48 inches to ride, 52 inches to surf standing up, and everyone must attend the orientation at the waterpark front desk first). Private sessions are listed from about $299 per hour, confirm the current price at the waterpark front desk before you commit.

💡 Do your souvenir shopping today, not tomorrow. Checkout mornings are for packing, not for a 40-minute browse in the gift shop with wet swimsuits in a bag.

Day 8, Saturday, October 31: Halloween checkout and drive home

Pack, check out, and here is the good news: at Wilderness the waterpark passes are for guests and, as at Kalahari, checkout day is still a swim day. Kalahari states it plainly, overnight guests may use the waterparks from 10:00 AM on arrival day and until close on departure day, so ask your front desk to confirm the same for your building. Squeeze in a final two-hour session, eat lunch, then drive the roughly 190 miles home, about 3 hours 15 minutes, aiming to be back in Minneapolis by early evening for trick-or-treating.

💡 Halloween costumes in the car. A short trick-or-treat round at home in the evening turns the drive back into the start of the fun rather than the end of the vacation.

Honest note: we did not find a guided tour on the big booking platforms for Wisconsin Dells in late October that clears our quality bar of at least 4.6 out of 5 with 50 or more ratings, so we have not padded this table with mediocre ones. The Dells in late October is a resort-and-park destination, not a guided-tour destination, and your money goes further inside the waterparks. Where a resort activity has no rating of its own, check the operator's current reviews before you pay.

Honest verdict: your dates straddle two weekends, and weekend nights are where the Dells makes its money. Seven nights with real food is not a $2,200 trip. Three ways to fix it, pick one:

1. Trim two nights. Arrive Sunday, October 25 and leave Friday, October 30. Five weekday nights at the Wild Weekdays rate, and you land inside $2,200 with room for the dinner show.
2. Book the Early Bird. Up to 20 percent off on stays of 2 or more nights booked 45 or more days ahead, which on a $1,700 room bill is up to about $340 back. Combined with a 6-night stay that keeps 7 nights nearly in reach.
3. Cook two dinners. A condo or villa with a kitchen turns $80 restaurant nights into $25 grocery nights. That alone is $110 to $165 over the week.

One saving to keep in view: Chula Vista midweek in late October is typically the cheapest of the three, and Kalahari plus the mandatory $39.99 per night resort fee is the most expensive. We recommend the Wilderness anyway, because the price gap to Chula Vista is smaller than the gap in water.

• Swimsuits, two per person. Nothing dries overnight in a hotel room in October
• Your own towels (saves the $25-per-lost-towel drama) and child-sized Coast Guard-approved life jackets
• Water shoes, pool decks and the walk between buildings are cold
• Warm layers, hats and rain jackets for the Devil's Lake day, plus real hiking or trail shoes
• Reusable water bottles. Outside food and coolers are not allowed inside the waterparks
• A tote for wet gear, and a plastic bag for the drive home
• Measure both kids' heights before you leave. Ride limits are strictly enforced (42, 48 and 54 inches are the key thresholds), and a taped measurement on the fridge prevents a heartbreak in the queue

💡 Tipping, since you asked for casual dinners: 15 to 20 percent at sit-down restaurants like Buffalo Phil's, Monk's and Moosejaw, a dollar or two per drink at the swim-up bars, and a few dollars for cabana attendants if you rent one. Posted US menu and ticket prices exclude sales tax, so expect the check to run a little above the menu math.
